A ZIP file extension is a compressed file archive format used by WinZip, an archive software application used to compress files for compact storage then uncompress them for use. ZIP files are popularly used to transmit large amounts of data quickly by email. In ZIP files, each record within the folder is compressed separately. They can be read and opened by most standard compression / decompression program utilities. Users of Microsoft Windows operating systems can create a ZIP archive file by right clicking the file and selecting “Send To / Compressed Zipped Folder.” Mac OS X users create files of this type by right clicking the file and selecting “Compress[filename].” There are four other types of files that use this file extension.
