An XLS file extension is a database file extension associated with Excel 1997-2003, created by Microsoft Corporation. This file is used to create spreadsheets, graphs, mail merges, and data tabulations, and is the default spreadsheet format for both PC and Mac operating systems. XLS files can be imported and exported to a variety of software database programs. It uses the proprietary format named Binary Interface File Format (BIFF), which is available in several versions due to its revision over time with revisions to the Excel program. In addition to fixed-size data streams, the XLS file can also contain image and object data that has been embedded in the Excel file. The metadata streams store document information such as the author’s name, the sheet names, and the subject.
