The player was developed by the non-profit organization VideoLAN, a group that promotes the use of multimedia open source code. When any type of media is imported and played on the media player, a VLC metadata file is created with all the information pertinent to that media and stored in one of the media folders on the computer. A program named ACUCOBOL-GT by Micro Focus also uses the VLC extension format for files that help media developers compile software that exists in one operating system to other operating systems.
