A TXT file extension is associated with a plain, unformatted text in a text file. The file is commonly supported by and can be open and read in a wide variety of text-editing programs, as well as most other software programs in general. In Microsoft Windows, Notepad is used to read a TXT file, and in Mac OS X, TextEdit is the program used. The files are stored in ASCII format, and are normally referred to as “universal” format files, since they don’t depend on a particular operating system to function. They can be embedded in a document or in a website on the internet. TXT files can also be read by a variety of mobile devices, such as smart phones and some e-readers, like the Amazon Kindle.
