The True Audio codec is an open source, real time audio file that uses WAV files as the basis for compression of audio information. True Audio is popular because it can compress and decompress data quickly. Compression rates for TTA files can be on the order of 30 to 70 percent, while still supporting multichannel audio of 8 to 24 bits. Since the file type is open source, it is supported by most operating systems, including Windows, Mac, and Linux. The file format is also capable of being played on many multimedia players, including WinAmp and VLC Player. A TTA file contains a header with a unique identifier, metadata about the file, and then the audio file itself.
