DESCRIPTION: A TIF file is a Tagged Image File owned by Adobe Systems.
A TIF file is an acronym for a Tagged Image File format, a lossy or lossless bitmap image format originally developed by Aldus Corporation and now owned by Adobe Systems. TIF files do not contain vector data and are not rasterized. They do contain bitmap data, and data for grayscale and color. They can be reduced in size without loss of data by the use of LZW compression. The format was originally introduced in 1984 as a compromise format for flatbed scanner manufacturers to use a common format instead of propriety software. TIF files could only support two-bit imaging at that time. Today it is one of the most popular imaging formats around, used by graphics and publication programs, photographers, fax machines, scanners, OCR applications, and word-processor programs. TIF files are also known as TIFF files.
