The SSI is a command line that tells the web server to look over the page for any dynamic attributes and keep them updated if they exist; a time stamp for example. With this type of formatting, web pages can be kept current without the need to refresh or reprocess the entire web page each time an update is required. SHTML files are written in text format, and can be read and edited in almost any text editor. SHTML files allow for web page customization without entirely re-developing a page. Because an SHTML file must pass through the server before being displayed, it can slow down processing time for a web page.
