An RM file extension is container file which holds video or audio data, and is associated with and opened and read by RealNetwork’s RealPlayer. Data housed in the RM container file is a combination of audio that has been compressed using RealAudio codecs, and video that has been compressed using RealVideo codecs. All of the codecs and the algorithms they use, as well as the format in which the compressed data is stored, are proprietary and owned by RealNetworks. The files can be streamed, and can be opened and read by RealPlayer plus some other third-party programs. Because of its compressed size and ability to be streamed, the RM file format is being used more and more by internet radio stations and in video embedded on web pages.
