MPEG is an abbreviation for Moving Picture Experts Group. This group develops and constantly improves upon standards for compressing audio and video. Many files that are commonly used for creating, storing, sharing, and editing audio and video files fall under the larger umbrella of being MPEG format files. For example, MPG, M1V, MP2, MP3, MPA, MPE, MPV2, and M3U, are all MPEG files that serve different functions toward meeting standards set by the Moving Picture Experts Group. This standard consists of: A) Systems (storage and synchronization of video, audio, and other data together), B) Compressed video content, C) Compressed audio content, D) Conformance testing (testing the correctness of implementations of the standard), and E) Reference software (example software showing how to encode and decode according to the standard).
