A MPC file extension is a lossy audio codec based on a MP2 algorithm, but improved for ideal compression of stereo audio. It is not as popular as a MP3, but known for being higher quality. This high quality is attributed to the variable bitrate a MPC file uses to compress the audio. Other similar audio compression formats use a constant bitrate for an entire audio file. Musepack has a bitrate that varies between 160 and 180 (up to 320 if done manually) kbit/s. This creates a file that has a low bitrate for less demanding regions of the audio data and a higher bitrate where it is needed. This method saves space while maximizing quality. Because MPC files are not as popular as MP3s, you may have some problems opening these files. Try downloading the appropriate plug-in for your player.
