How To Open JP2 Files

DESCRIPTION:

A JP2 file extension is used to denote a JPEG-2000 file, a compressed image format that was created to replace the Digital Cosine Transformation compression algorithm, used to process JPEG images, with a wavelet algorithm. JP2 is the brainchild of the Joint Photographic Experts Group committee, who wanted to increase the flexibility of JPEG files by taking advantage of new technology available in 2000. The new format is slightly more compressible than the original, but the main advantage of this file type is that it is scalable, although complex encoders are required to do so. A JP2 image can be stored lossy or lossless, and was designed to conform with ISO standard 15444-1. The format is not in widespread use on the internet, despite being in existence for more than ten years. It is similar to a JPX file.
