An HTML extension is typically associated with Hyper Text Markup Language, the most popular code used to develop and build static webpages on web sites. HTML code was first standardized in 1996 by a group of software developers who provided input to an organization known as the World Wide Web Consortium, or W3C. In the year 2000, the International Organization of Standards, the ISO, formalized the standard, officially publishing it as ISO/IEC 15445:2000, which is still maintained and revised regularly. HTML language is read and interpreted by web browsers but is not visible to users. However, the source code can be opened, read, or edited in any basic text editor if desired right from a web page. HTML files format links, text, headlines, tables, and static elements contained on a web page.
