A G3 file extension is facsimile data file associated with a International Telecommunications Union (ITU) protocol for a Group 3 (digital) fax machines in raw form, i.e., no header. The Group 3 protocol was first published in 1980 by the ITU. A G3 file uses the ITU T.30 protocol to encrypt data in digital format for transmission over analog lines, which must be reconverted to digital code when it reaches the other fax machine. G3 files contain a series of bits, 0s and 1s, to represent light and dark areas on a page. They support a minimum row height of 100 pixels, and a maximum row height of 1728 pixels. The G3 file extension is supported by all fax machines that adhere to the ITU protocols.
