A FLAC file is a true open-source audio file format that compresses audio files without losing any of the fidelity of the original recording. It was developed and is freely licensed by Xiph.org Foundation. It is compatible with a variety of operating systems, including Windows, Mac OS X, Linux, OS/2, and IRIX. It is also supported by a range of home, mobile, and portable audio systems. FLAC files are designed for fast, real-time decoding, and as a result are not as suitable for editing as other codecs. A FLAC file must be accompanied by a fingerprint file ffp.txt, as a way to hold the checksum information and file name of the audio file.
