An EXIF file extension is an information text file that contains information about an image taken by a digital camera. The EXIF file contains metadata concerning the image and how it was captured and the type of equipment used to take it, including the model of the camera, the shutter speed, exposure length, aperture, focal length, flash setting, ISO, and other pertinent information. EXIF data is stored within the same file that houses the image information, and gets stored and transferred with the image between applications. When this file type is used for JPEG images, the information gets stored in a utility application segment, or App1. When this file type is used for TIFF images, it is stored using a TIFF private tag.
