An EPUB file extension is an acronym for Electronic Publisher, a text file format written in open XML language and used for digital publications and books available electronically on e-readers. The EPUB format is based on several open standards for formatting and structure maintained by the International Digital Publishing Forum (IDPF), including the Open Container Format (OCF), used to package ebook files in a compressed format, Open Packaging Format (OPF), which defines the structure of the book, and Open Publication Structure (OPS), which is used for content markup. EPUB files are typically protected by Digital Rights Management (DRM) protocol, which keeps unauthorized users from viewing the content. EPUB files are used on hardware devices such as Sony’s’ E-Reader, Amazon’s Kindle, and Barnes & Noble’s Nook.
