EPS stands for encapsulated postscript and is a container for graphic formats including vector, bitmap, and text that has the ability to be placed into another .PS document. Postscript (.PS) has a long history that dates back to 1976. It is essentially a programming language that communicates how an images and graphics should be displayed via a given device. Adobe’s EPS file extension is supported by vector imaging programs and various drawing programs. In fact, all Adobe products, namely Illustrator, Photoshop, and InDesign can save text or other art to .eps format. Because of how this type of file is handled in various programs, there is not a way to actually identify it. For instance, Windows format will be different from a Mac format and both will be different from another program’s formatting.
