The term DVD is used freely to refer to a circular disk that houses copied images or video. This is a true use of the word but the extension by the same name means something else. Although it has something to do with images, a .DVD file extension is not the same as the storage device for which movies are stored. It has more to do with how it is copied and stored. These types of files are disk image files and are used essentially to communicate how to copy data, audio and media exactly as the original file. CloneCD uses the .DVD file format for cloning most DVD formats, which includes DVD-RW, DVD-R, DVD+R, DVD+RW and DVD-Raw. This tool can also be used to clone CDs.
