A C file extension is a source code file written for use with C or C++ programming languages. Files of this type can contain the entire code for a program, or may be one of the files referenced by the source code within a program. C files can be edited by using any basic text editing program, but syntax highlighting will not be shown, which is a helpful tool to programmers. In Unix operating systems, compilers use the lower case “c” for C program language and an upper case “C” for C++ program language, but this is not a common convention.
