An ASCII file extension is a text file type developed from the American Standard Code for Information Interchange. ASCII files code data based on English-alphabet-based characters. Files of this type denote text with almost any type of electronic device that uses text to display information. ASCII code originally began as code for telegraphic devices. The American Standards Association (ASA) formed a subcommittee that began work in 1960 and published the first code in 1963. It was the default character code on the internet until 2008 when it was replaced by UTF-8 code. 128 characters make up the ASCII scheme, including alphabet letters, numbers, symbols, and punctuation, with the balance being made up by control characters. ASCII-coded files are normally displayed with the file extensions ASC and TXT.
